Background
Brad Ditty, President & Founder
Brad is a U.S. patent attorney and IP advisor recognized for his ability to develop effective strategies to protect innovation and realize value. His career was built on helping innovative businesses succeed by building robust IP portfolios and actively using IP to achieve strategic objectives. Brad understands that accumulating IP without a clear plan for its use significantly increases costs with little promise of returning value. For that reason, Brad works with clients to understand their business needs and identify ways to leverage intellectual property in support of their goals. Whether it’s an emerging business looking to differentiate from the competition, a market leader pressured by brazen imitators, a start-up looking to attract investment . . . Brad understands how critical IP strategy, and its execution, is to success.
Brad’s expertise stems from over 25 years of protecting innovation and developing intellectual property rights to strengthen and enable businesses. In his most recent position as Vice President and General Patent Counsel for InterDigital, Brad led the patent department of a major wireless and video research organization with over 30,000 worldwide patents and applications. There, he and his team managed and developed the company’s industry-recognized patent portfolio and provided perpetual support to a licensing program that earned over $3.5B over a ten-year period. He played a critical role in all major IP-related matters at InterDigital. From licensing to litigation, acquisitions and divestitures, Brad skillfully influenced InterDigital’s IP activities for over 15 years. In 2012, he was the senior patent executive on InterDigital’s deal team for a $375M patent sale to Intel. In 2018, he oversaw all patent aspects of the acquisition of Technicolor’s patents team and its portfolio of over 18,000 patents and applications – a transaction valued at over $475M. In 2019, he testified at a hearing on proposed patent legislation before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Intellectual Property. In 2022, as a product of Brad’s patent portfolio leadership, InterDigital was recognized in the Global Top 100 for Innovation Momentum (LexisNexis Innovation Momentum 2022). Throughout his tenure, in addition to routinely collaborating on company licensing activities, he provided extensive support for international patent litigations that led to favorable resolutions with companies including Samsung, LG Electronics, Microsoft, Huawei, ZTE and Xiaomi, among others.
Prior to InterDigital, Brad was Vice President, Patents for BTG International (now part of Boston Scientific). There he worked with many individual and small-entity inventors, developing robust IP portfolios and supporting commercialization efforts for an array of technologies. Brad evaluated and enhanced patent portfolios to strengthen opportunities for licensing and collaboration with third parties. And when necessary, he suggested strategies for patent enforcement, managing and supporting litigations to secure rightful compensation to BTG and its partners.
Brad began his patent career at The Whitaker Corporation, the IP management subsidiary of AMP Incorporated/Tyco Electronics (now, TE Connectivity). In those early years as an attorney, he learned how critical a strong patent portfolio is to a product business operating in a highly competitive environment. In addition to drafting and prosecuting patent applications worldwide, he routinely analyzed company and third-party patents to identify potential infringement, manage attendant risks, and recommend appropriate further action.
Brad earned his law degree and his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a licensed Pennsylvania lawyer and is registered as a patent attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
